Fairy Meadow located in the Illawarra, is mainly a low density residential area and is very popular with tourists and surfers, due to both its long beach views opposing just as appealing scenic mountain views.
The district of Fairy Meadow was initially named after Para Creek, also known as Fairy Creek. The name can be attributed to the nature of the land in the area. The grassed open meadow lands, with a fresh stream of water running through, noted from the early days for its ‘fairy like’ beauty.
Fairy Meadow residents live mainly in older style housing, although there has been an increased number of apartments and townhouses being built over the last few years.
The main shopping area within this suburb includes a Woolworths and Aldi, amongst other popular cafe’s, restaurants and small boutiques.
The New Ambience project, which is currently underway in an already bustling Fairy Meadow, is set to add further life to the area. Opportunities at the New Ambience include street front and internal retail shops, first floor office accommodation, over 200 on-site car parking spaces and 34 high quality residential apartments. This development is said to greatly benefit the area for the Fairy Meadow community, as well as neighbouring suburbs.
A main attraction is Fairy Meadow Beach, popular for its stunning coastal views, with picnic facilities, a playground for the young ones, a bike track and home of the Fairy Meadow Surf Life Saving Club. A simple 5 minute walk from Fairy Meadow beach is an innovation campus of the University of Wollongong, known as Campus East. This has been a powering change of fortune for the area, housing 455 students, being a 10 minute drive to the main campus of the University of Wollongong, a short 5 minute walk to the shops, as well as being a short way to the Fairy Meadow train station.
